A worldwide database of autosomal markers used by the forensic community

      Abstract

We generated a worldwide autosomal STR DNA database (http://www.strdna-db.org) for use by the forensic genetics community. The interface is user-friendly, allowing an easy visualisation of geographic location of samples and an easy export of allelic frequencies for further genetic comparisons.

      Keywords

      1. Introduction

Worldwide genetic databases are useful tools in forensic genetics, given that any individual profile must be compared against a population dataset. Some recent catastrophes called the attention to the inexistence of an easy-available worldwide autosomal database, for evaluation of the multiethnic genetic profiles.
The database implemented in this work collects published data in the main forensic international journals for autosomal short tandem repeats (STRs), at a worldwide scale. Publications reporting at least six of the most used markers were included. The STRs considered were CSF1PO, D2S1338, D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D8S1179, D13S317, D16S539, D18S51, D19S433, D21S11, FGA, Penta D, Penta E, TH01, TPO and vWA.
The database will have the obvious limitation of not performing a quality control of data, relying on the acceptance criteria used by the main forensic international journals.
      The database URL is http://www.strdna-db.org.

      2. Implementation

A user-friendly web interface was developed, with geographical disclosure on a Googlemap, so that users can easily identify which populations are already surveyed in different worldwide regions (Fig. 1). The interface was optimised to be used on Internet Explorer browser.

The allelic frequencies for each sample are displayed in an excel file, easily exportable for further comparisons.

      3. Future developments

The broad geographical scale aimed in this database will for sure contribute new insights on general STRs informative power and on population genetics analyses.
In the near future we intend to implement a calculation of match probabilities of DNA profiles [
